Machakos senatorial race down to Maendeleo Chap Chap, Wiper and UDA
Machakos senatorial by-election will offer a platform for a fierce supremacy political contest between Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Machakos senator Johnstone Muthama.
In what appears to be a well-staged battle royale for the control of the vote rich Lower Eastern County, Dr Mutua has cleared former water Minister John Mutua Katuku with Muthama fronting an insurance underwriter Urbanus Muthama Ngengele while Kalonzo has sponsored Muthama’s ex-wife Agnes Kavindu.
The three Ukambani political supremos have been evaluating their political influence in the March 18 by-election that was occasioned by the death of Chama Cha Uzalendo party leader Boniface Mutinda Kabaka last month.
Kalonzo and Mutua have declared their interests in inheriting President Uhuru Kenyatta when his term expires in 2022 while Muthama is the lead Deputy President William Ruto Campaigner in Ukambani.
Mutua sprung into the political limelight in 2013 when he was elected the first area Governor on a Wiper party ticket garnering 257,357 votes.
Later in 2014, Mutua ‘s relationship with Kalonzo Musyoka broke, hence the formation of Mendeleo Chap Chap (MCC-P) that he would defend his Gubernatorial seat with in 2017.
During his first term, Mutua alleged that Wiper party through the ticket. In 2017, Mutua went against the National Super Alliance(NASA) wave to defend his seat by garnering 249,603 votes followed by Wipers Wavinya Ndeti who scored 209,141 in the hotly contested race that was later unsuccessfully contested in court.
During that time, Muthama who cited irreconcilable political differences with his former party leader Kalonzo Musyoka ditched a bid to defend the senate seat.
Muthama would later completely part ways with Kalonzo and publicly gravitate towards DP Ruto. He is currently the chairman of the newly formed United Democratic alliance (UDA) linked to DP Ruto.
Recently, Muthama told Kalonzo that he will be unveiling a political formation across the Ukambani region that will be keen on rooting out Wiper party.
“Let Kalonzo go his way and I go mine and let us meet in the ballot come 2022 when I will be leading a parallel front and see who will emerge the strongest” said Muthama.
