The Muslim community joined their global fellows in initiating the celebrations of Eid-Ul-Fitr, heralding the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadhan.

This year, a remarkable display of unity unfolded, with no confusion marking the start of the celebrations- a departure from past norms of discord and uncertainty.

Eid-ul-Fitr, known as the Festival of Breaking the Fast, holds immense significance for Muslims worldwide, symbolising the culmination of Ramadhan, a month dedicated to fasting and spiritual reflection.

The festivities commenced following the confirmation by Chief Kadhi Sheikh Abdulhalim Hussein of the sighting of the new moon in multiple regions, confirming yesterday as the first day of Shawwal, the month following Ramadhan.

During such occasions, Muslims are encouraged to engage in congregational prayers with their local community, strengthening bonds of unity and solidarity.

In Mombasa, hundreds of faithful congregated in various open grounds, unfurling their prayer mats in unison to partake in Eid Salah, a pivotal aspect of the Eid celebrations.

At the Masjid Ummu Kulthum Grounds in Kizingo, Mufti Daktur led the prayer, joined by leaders and dignitaries, including former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, Mombasa Speaker Aharub Khatri, and businessman Abu Joho.

In a post-prayer address to the press, Joho, also the ODM deputy party leader, emphasised the Coastal region’s commitment to unity, transcending political affiliations.

At the Ronald Ngala Primary School grounds, Mombasa Governor Abduswamad Nassir and Chief Kadhi Sheikh Abdulhalim Hussein joined hundreds of faithful for prayers.

Yesterday, roads leading to the Central Business District (CBD) teemed with scores of faithful en route to Makadara grounds, restaurants, and other recreational spots. The atmosphere was vibrant, with various items on display, from houseware to clothes, and fun activities like swinging and face painting taking place at the grounds along Makadara Road, off Digo Road.

Mwembe Tayari, Digo Road, Makadara, among other routes, experienced heavy traffic as faithful and residents journeyed to Mama Ngina Waterfront and other destinations to unwind after the month-long Ramadhan period.

In Kisii, faithful celebrated Eid at Jamia mosque and called on the government to ease conditions for them to acquire civil documents to access government services.

Saidi Awadh, Kisii county youth coordinator said they had difficulties applying for the documents due to strict conditions.
