A witness yesterday exonerated Dennis Itumbi from contents of a letter alleging a plot to assassinate Deputy President William Ruto.

Lead investigating officer, Isaac Ruto, told the court that a forensic report had revealed that  the former State House digital strategist was not the author of the letter.

While being cross examined by Itumbi’s lawyer Katwa Kigen, Ruto said the forensic report did not indicate that Itumbi made or authored the letter alleging that top Government officials met at hotel La Mada in Nairobi and schemed to assassinate the DP.

He also denied claims that Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho was one of the witnesses in the case.

Ruto told Milimani Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku that Kibicho was not among the prosecution witnesses.

He also said he did not investigate whether the President received the letter as it was not necessary because it was fake.

Investigator was testifying in a case in which Itumbi and Samuel Gateri are accused of publishing a false statement.

It is alleged that they published a letter dated May 30, 2019, with the intent to cause anxiety and breach public peace.

Gateri is alleged to have made a letter dated May 30 purporting to have been signed by a Cabinet Secretary in the conspiracy to assassinate the Deputy President.

Ruto, during cross-examination, told the court that he did not investigate the venue of the alleged meeting.

He also  said he did not investigate claims that a Cabinet Secretary had authored the letter.
