Boston and New York Marathon champion Mary Wacera says she is excited to run at this year’s London Marathon, her first marathon outside America since her debut in the 42km event.

“I am excited to run on a flat course for the first time and more so in London which is a huge event.

“I am looking forward to running in the streets of London. It is exciting,” she said.

She termed the London Marathon course as flat in comparison to Boston and New York City marathons which she has participated in since she ventured into the marathon race.

“London is a huge race and getting a chance to race there cannot be taken for granted,” she said adding that she will approach the race just like her past races.

“I will do my best and not limit myself. Just like in my past races I will not give myself a position but will be seeking to improve on my personal best (PB),” she told PD Sport. Her PB stands at 2:21.32.

She said the lineup of the women’s race is big but she will take it as a learning curve and new experience now that she will be running against the best.

All her past marathons have been run in America and finished in the top five in all.

Among those who will step in the start line with Wacera in the October’s marathon is world record holder Brigid Kosgei (2:14:04), defending champion Joyciline Jepkosgei (2:17:43) and several Ethiopians who have personal bests of under two hours and 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, Wacera’s training mate in Nyahururu, Monica Ngige, is also excited to make her European marathon running debut when she lines up for Valencia Marathon, Spain, in December.

Valencia will be her third marathon having run two Boston Marathons including her debut in the 42km event two years ago.
