Wamira siblings steal the show at Deaflympics trials
Spectators and Deaf Athletics of Kenya (DAAK) selectors were treated to some athletic action at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on day two of the Deaf Athletics games.
The selectors also had a tough time picking a competitive team for the delayed 2021 Summer Deaflympics in Caxias do Sul, Brazil.
The event continued into the second day with Simon Kibai scooping first position in the 5000m with a time of 14:07:05.
Wamira siblings, David, Beryl and Rael put up an electrifying show in both men and women 100m finals.
Beryl and Rael Wamira came in first and second position respectively in the 100 metres ladies category.
David Wamira secured first position with a time of 10:7 one second less than he had clocked on Tuesday.
Isaac Atima who has been an equal competitor to David in the 100m heat, came in second with a time of 11:0 to secure a spot in the squad that is traveling to Brazil.
David also secured first position in the 200 meters to cement his position in the traveling squad.
In the 10,000 m final Peter Toroitich trounced Simon Kibai to take first position.
Kibai had earlier scooped first position in the 5000m with a time of 14:07:05 and also in the1500m with a best time of 4:07:02.
In the 400m final Atima came in first with a time of 57:6 with George Waweru coming in second recording a 59:4 time.
Gracy Kendagor won the women’s 10,000m final with an improved time of 3:46:03 while Cerah Wangare secured second position with 4:53:06.
Ann Wangechi and Joseph Gitau were winners in the 10,000m walk with Wangechi posting 65:43 and Gitau posting 52:57 in women and men category respectively.
Summer Deaflympics are scheduled to take place from first May where Kenya will be represented by four teams - athletics, women’s football and both men’s and women’s basketball sides.
Deaf Football Federation of Kenya has since named a 35-woman squad to go into camp from March 20 in preparation for the Deaflympics.
DAAK chairman Jones Kirui confirmed that 200 participants from across the country had participated in the two day event.
However DAAK has only selected 70 athletes who will enter camp from March 26 in preparation for the global event.
