Moses Kuria – We will not pay Chinese debts if Ruto is elected President
Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has revealed that a William Ruto-led government will default on paying Chinese debts should the Kenya Kwanza coalition win the August 9 polls.
Speaking during a rally held by United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party in Nakuru county on Friday, June 24, 2022, Kuria angrily hit out at the Chinese business community in Kenya.
The Chama Cha Kazi party leader lamented that Chinese contractors were importing lorries to Kenya without paying taxes.
"Nataka kuongea na watu wa Mwireri na niongee na our incoming Deputy President Mweshimiwa Rigathi. Mweshimiwa Rigathi kuna watu wanaitwa Chinese. China wanakuja hapa ati ni contractor. Wanaleta list ingine inaitwa master list. Wanaleta hizi malorry bila kulipa ushuru. Sisi tunasema tukichugua serikali hakuna master list, kila mtu alipe ushuru.
"I want to speak with the people of Mwireri and our incoming Deputy President Honourable Rigathi. Honourable Rigathi there are people called Chinese who come here as contractors. They bring a list called master list which allows them to import lorries to Kenya without paying taxes. When we take over the government there will be no master list, everybody should pay taxes," he said.
Moses Kuria says Chinese should stay in China
The Gatundu South MP further complained that the Chinese were competing with locals apart from not just paying taxes.
He stressed that the Chinese should stop competing with local business people, saying that there are no Kenyan hawkers in China.
Kuria also suggested that the Chinese should continue buying Kenyan avocados without them ever setting foot in Kenya.
The controversial lawmaker also made it clear that a William Ruto-led government would default on paying Chinese debts should the Kenya Kwanza alliance win the August 9 election.
"Wanaleta malorry bila kulipa ushuru alafu wanaanza kucompete na hawa vijana (speaking in Gikuyu) when you go to Beijing there is no Kikuyu hawker, there is no Luhya hawker. China wakae kwao waache kukuja hapa kucompete na sisi mambo ya biashara. Wanunue avocado yetu na ata hizo madeni zao tutakosa kulipa.
"They import lorries without paying taxes then they start competing with these youths. When you go to Beijing there are no Kikuyu or Luhya hawkers. Chinese should remain in China, they should stop coming here to compete with us in matters business. Let them buy our avocados. Even their debts we will not pay," Moses Kuria said.
Kuria's sentiment that a Ruto-led government would default on Chinese debts comes weeks after Roots party presidential candidate Prof. George Wajackoyah said that his government should he be elected would pay Chinese debts using bhang.
