Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party leader Raila Odinga has announced that the opposition is still heading to Murang'a for town hall meetings, despite opposition from the police.

In a post on social media, Raila said that the coalition would hold town hall meetings in Taj Gardens along Thika Road and Mother's Union Hall in Murang'a town.

"Tuko njiani. Murang'a tunakuja! (We are on the way. Murang'a we are coming!)," he posted.

This comes after reports that Murang’a police commander David Mathiu had rejected the meeting on the basis that Azimio submitted their notice late.

According to the police, the notice should be served four days earlier for proper planning but Azimio submitted it on Tuesday, with the meetings set to be held on Thursday, April 20.

Raila's statement

On Wednesday, Raila called the resident to freely engage on issues affecting them.

"As part of our on-going engagement with the public on the critical challenges facing our country including high cost of basic commodities, search for electoral justice, reform and reconstitution of the IEBC and protection of our hard won multi-party democracy, the leadership of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition will hold a town hall meeting in Muranga Town tomorrow from 10 am," said Odinga.

"Like all engagements that the party has held in recent months, the Muranga meeting will be peaceful and strictly within the law. We invite residents to turn up in large numbers and freely engage on issues affecting them."

Among those expected in the Town Hall meetings include Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, George Wajackoyah and Mwangi wa Iria and Jeremiah Kioni.
