Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party co-principal and Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua has accused President William Ruto's regime of dividing the country into two sides.

In a statement on Thursday, July 20, 2023, Karua claimed that the government has pushed Kenyans to fight against each other, with some staging demonstrations to counter opposition protests.

"Clearly, the Ruto illegitimate regime has split Kenya into two - a shareholders Kenya where UDA supporters can stage ‘counter’ demonstrations escorted by police and a republic under siege where police unleash death and mayhem against peaceful demonstrators in flagrant violation of the Constitution," Karua said.

Karua's sentiments come at a time the country is experiencing tension due to the ongoing anti-government protests which entered the second consecutive day on Thursday.

Despite relative calm returning in the country's major cities and towns, most Kenyans kept indoors and a number of businesses closed remained shut as the opposition vowed to press on with the demos.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga, who has not appeared in public since the demos started on Wednesday, announced on Thursday that the demonstrations would continue until the "voice of the people" is heard.

"Babu’s lawyer has filed an application for the MP to be produced at the Milimani High Court today," Raila said.

The opposition is protesting the high cost of living, reconstitution of the electoral commission and government "raid" into opposition parties among other issues.
