Police in Siaya are investigating claims that some politicians in the county are importing teargas from a neighbouring country to disrupt their opponents' campaigns.

Siaya County Commissioner Mohammed Barre said his officers are trailing supporters of some politicians who are being used to instil fear on members of the public.

The latest incident occurred last Saturday at Sega Vocational Training Institute in Ugenya Sub-County where a former Treasury employee, Daniel Odhiambo, was launching his political bid for Ugenya constituency.

“We have had challenges in the recent past where people used unorthodox means. They bought tear gas from a neighbouring country which they threw into the multitude, endangering the lives of the residents,” he said.

He said that a special police squad, led by the county police commander, has been formed to track and bring to book those behind insecurity in the county.

Barre said that the county security team was committed to ensuring maximum security to all citizens before, during and after the elections adding that no one will be spared should he or she break the law.
