The ongoing operation to flush out bandits in the North Rift has received a boost after 20 illegal firearms were surrendered by herders in Kakong area of Turkana county.

Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Abdi Hassan (pictured) said the firearms were surrendered to the national government administration and police during a public meeting held at Kakong trading centre.

The meeting was also attended by the Turkana Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai, Turkana County Commissioner Jacob Ouma, County and Sub-County Intelligence Committee members and Turkana Woman Representative Cecilia Asinyen Ngetit.

Another AK-47 rifle was also recovered in Tiaty, Baringo County and two suspects arrested.  Hassan said initial investigation revealed that the rifle, which had an empty magazine, was used during a robbery on April 12 at Kiserian in Marigat Sub-County where 70 cows were stolen and a man shot dead by armed bandits.

During the raid, Collins Kukat Kwonyiko,28, was shot dead at his farm within Kanyumbi village.

Detectives visited the scene and established that the deceased was shot by Pokot bandits who had raided the Kiserian area and drove away with 70 heads of cattle.   Three suspects were identified and a manhunt for them was immediately launched which resulted in the two of them being arrested on Tuesday.
