Kibaki says Moi built rich legacy, stabilised country
Retired President Mwai Kibaki said his predecessor, Daniel arap Moi built a rich legacy that will be hard to forget.
Kibaki said Moi especially ensured Kenya had a stable political foundation.
In a tribute read on his behalf by his nephew and Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi the third President said Moi’s leadership had saved the country from possible unrest that would have burnt it during her young years.
“With time, his mastery at thwarting crises became legendary as was his ability to assert State authority.
Kenya stabilised as a number of countries on the continent suffered disruptions and long periods of civil unrest,” the retired President said.
Moi’s voluntary retirement in 2002 and peaceful handing over of power to him after Kanu’s Uhuru Kenyatta was defeated raised his profile.
“President Moi’s abiding charisma was best exhibited in 2002 when he oversaw an unprecedented smooth transition of power as he proceeded to his retirement. His willingness to readily usher in the next president remains a badge of honour on his leadership as well as statesmanship credentials,” he said.
Social enterprises
Moi, Kibaki said, would be remembered for the numerals social enterprises, institutions of learning and healthcare centres, which he extended his support to.
“Moi’s legacy is deeply entrenched in the unfolding memoir of our nation. His contribution to the Kenya we all desire is tattooed in us,” he said.
