Police have been allowed 12 more days to continue holding businessman Chris Obure and his co-suspect Robert Ouko over the shooting of Kevin Omwenga at Galana Suites in Kilimani, Nairobi last week.

In his ruling, Kibera senior principal Magistrate Derrick Kuto said police needed more time to conduct proper investigations into the murder.

He said that a precious life was lost and Omwenga’s family wants to know what happened.

“I agree that the Police need more time to conduct investigations. A precious life was lost; the family of the deceased deserves to know what happened to the deceased. I hereby direct the respondents to be detained for 12 days at the respective police station,” Kuto ruled.

Investigating officer Bashir Boya told the court he is yet to record statements from the key witnesses, taking of fingerprints, photo profiling and taking the two suspects for DNA sampling for analysis by the Government Chemist and also mental assessment.

The magistrate ordered the suspects to be remanded at Kilimani police station until September 4 when they will be brought back to court for further directions.

Police wanted 14 days but the magistrate reduced it to 12 days to complete their investigation before taking any action.

Inspector Boya in his affidavit had told the court that they are investigating the offence of murder contrary to section 203 as read with section 204 of the penal code, which they need time to complete.
