Will Wazito regret letting Rupia leave for free?
The stone which the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone of the temple.
This is a phrase which aptly describes AFC Leopards scoring machine Elvis Rupia.
Soon after the expiry of his contract with Zambia’s Power Dynamos, Rupia returned home where he was lured by Moneybags Wazito.
Wazito, who are bankrolled by the fabulously wealthy Swedish businessman Ricardo Badoer, apparently expressed interest in Rupia due to his past exploits with Kenyan Premier League side Nzoia Sugar before he tested waters in the Zambian top-tier league.
After all, the predatory striker had proved his worth when he scooped the 2018 KPL Golden Boot after scoring 15 goals in 22 appearances for Nzoia.
But fast forward a few months after Rupia penned a deal with Wazito, they doubted his qualities and parted ways with him and AFC Leopards were only too eager to sign him and the move is now paying dividends.
Rupia’s quick-feet has seen him net six goals in six matches, the latest of which was a hat-trick in Leopards’ 3-0 whacking of Sofapaka at Moi International Sports Centre (MISC) Kasarani at the weekend.
Since joining the Den, Rupia has been a stand-out player for Ingwe with pundits tipping him for the Golden Boot at the end of the season.
During the start of the Betking Premier League, Wazito were humiliated 4-0 by Kariobangi Sharks and after their strikers misfired the whole afternoon, they must be regretting why they off-loaded Rupia who is now seemingly scoring for fun in the top flight.
In the meantime, it seems there is no stopping Leopards and KCB, the only teams that have seen action with hundred percent records.
Ingwe did what many felt was unthinkable by stopping pre-match favourites Sofapaka, a result which saw the Big Cats take an early lead in the league with maximum nine points from three matches.
KCB continued to send warning signals with a 2-0 win over Kakamega Homeboyz and their second placing in the league gives their fans hope that something good is in the offing.
Defending champions Gor Mahia started the title defence with a slim 1-0 win over Ulinzi Stars.
Another interesting talking point is the suspension of ‘rebel’ clubs Mathare United and Zoo FC from the league by Football Kenya Federation.
