With the National Super League having taken a two-week break, all eyes are on the lower teams to see how they intend to evade relegation.

The bottom five teams are all in danger of being on the chopping board with none of them having attained the 20 points mark so far.

Granted, the battle for relegation and survival is expected to be interesting in the coming weeks when the second league resumes on April 16.

The trio of Mara Sugar FC, Gusii FC and Mwatate United FC are in the dreaded zone with the former two tied on 18 points while Mwatate are at 15 points and are the tail-enders in the standings.

Collectively, the three teams have won ten matches, just one shy of leaders APS Bomet FC who have the bragging rights of having 11 since the new season got underway.

SS Assad FC and Migori Youth who have had nightmarish outings in the season are also not off the hook yet.

Newly promoted Assad FC from Mombasa are currently 16th on the table with 20 points and will certainly need to pull up their socks to evade banishment.

However, Migori Youth coach Marwa Chamberi said they are not pressing the panic button, adding that there is still room for improvement.

“We are unperturbed by our lowly placing and sooner rather than later we shall haul ourselves up. All we need to do is to strive to play beautiful football and pluck points and the rest shall fall in place,” offered Chamberi.

The tactician said their driving force and inspiration moving forward is winning their latest fixtures.

“We won our two last matches which is encouraging but of course, we are not in the best position which we hope to reverse. I must say I am encouraged by the attitude of my players which is an important virtue heading into the remaining fixtures,” he said.

On his part, Hussein Mohamed who is in charge of Coastal Heroes said his biggest concern is lack of finances which tend to demotivate players.

Although Heroes have dropped to 14th position in the league chart, Mohamed is hopeful that his team will evade the relegation zone.

“Acute financial challenges have affected us for a lengthy time. I must concede that morale amongst players is at an all-time low but I have instructed the players to keep working hard while the management seeks sponsors,” Mohamed said

He added: “Perhaps unbeknown to many we have been merely surviving courtesy of well-wishers but I have this strong feeling that we are not relegation candidates.”
