Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya presidential candidate Raila Odinga has promised to ensure access to quality healthcare for all Kenyans should he win the presidency in the next election.

In the Azimio la Umoja manifesto launched on Monday, Raila affirms his commitment to introducing “Baba care”, which will include affordable, accessible, quality healthcare.

“The Azimio commitment is to introduce Baba care which will invest in promotive and preventive health care and wellbeing, ensure that every Kenyan shall receive adequate primary healthcare services as per need and this shall be free at the point of delivery,” reads the manifesto.

The coalition said it will introduce emergency treatment in most hospitals and strengthen efforts in eradicating malaria by 2030.

A Raila government would also seek to re-examine and improve the working conditions and remuneration of health professionals and establish a framework to monitor the safety and standards of products.

“The health and wellbeing of a people will affect a country’s productivity. Despite a number of initiatives having been undertaken to improve healthcare services, the problem persists,” the manifesto states.

It says the Covid-19 pandemic had proved that investment in comprehensive healthcare is vital.

At the same time, he pledged an inclusive, transformative education system.

He says he will apply the “waste not a single child” policy to ensure all children access free, quality education, should he form the next government.

In his manifesto, Raila underscores the need to equip the youth with knowledge and skills to be problem solvers to cultivate a globally competitive workforce that serves as the source of transformative technological advances.

The coalition has promised to invest in a comprehensive education programme that will ensure all children get access to quality education and provide free education from early childhood development level to university.

“Education is the cornerstone whereby our government will continue to build a strong foundation, responsible for nurturing and empowering the citizenry for the realisation of an economic revolution for the future of our great nation. Throughout history, education has served as the greatest equaliser, having the power to level the playing field irrespective of one’s social status,” states the manifesto.

Although Kenya has made significant progress towards universal education, Raila said, the sector still faces a number of challenges that his administration would solve if he wins the next election.
