NCCK calls for openness on polls process

National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) yesterday urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to regularly update Kenyans on the preparations and readiness for next month’s election.

In a statement read by General Secretary Canon Chris Kinyanjui, NCCK implored the Judiciary to defend justice and rule of law through quick conclusion of election-related cases.

Kinyanjui spoke at Jumuia Conference and Country Home, Limuru after a two-day Executive Committee meeting.

The clerics urged the electoral body to obey court orders in matters relating to the elections noting that failure to do so would amount to denying Kenyans the right to choose their leaders.

Citing the case of Reuben Kigame in which the court directed that his name be on the presidential ballot, NCCK said IEBC has no choice but obey the orders.

“Even though his inclusion will cost Kenyans a fortune, he should be considered otherwise it will set a bad precedent likely to make Kenyans lose confidence in the electoral body,” said Kinyanjui.
