Uhuru: Africa has been discriminated against in Covid-19 vaccine distribution
President Uhuru Kenyatta, on Wednesday, claimed that African and Caribbean countries are being discriminated against in the roll-out of the Covid-19 vaccine.
Speaking in a TV interview, President Kenyatta said that there has been apartheid distribution of the jab by the countries with stronger economies.
He noted that the have been some countries in the West and East that are already giving their citizens the third dose of the jab yet there are some countries in Africa and the Caribbean that are yet to give the first dose to a quarter of their population.
"It has been vaccine apartheid, how can you call it anything other when you have countries, developed countries, owners of the vaccine, owners of the factories, injecting their people with not only the two injections but also moving to inject a third booster injection. Yet most of our countries are well below five percent who have received even one single dose," President Uhuru said.
The president, therefore, called on the discriminated countries to come together so that they can increase their bargaining power in the rollout of the vaccine.
"When countries come together our voice becomes stronger, we have much more powerful across the multilateral system," he said.
