United Nations lauds Nakuru for ‘turning waste to wealth’
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has lauded Nakuru for establishing a company that uses human waste to make cooking briquettes, saying that will go a long way in conserving the environment.
UN-Habitat Programme Division director Rafael Tuts said the initiative was commendable, adding that the UN-Habitat is focusing on waste management as a key component in addressing challenges of climate change and poverty reduction.
Speaking in Nakuru during the national celebrations to mark the World Habitat Day at the NAWASCOAL grounds, Tuts called for more investment and innovation towards transforming waste to wealth.
“Our new strategic plan is positioning waste management as key in addressing the climate change challenges and poverty.
I appeal to you all to join in this campaign, Nakuru has done great in achieving the same,” he said.
Transport Cabinet secretary James Macharia said there is a need for more efforts towards solid waste management.
The CS said the government is committed to supporting such innovations, adding that municipal solid waste exceeds two billion tones globally observing that with the continued increase in the population then there is need to rethink the housing programme.
Sustainable solution
Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui, who commended the national government and UN-Habitat for choosing Nakuru to host the event, acknowledged the need for the town to look for sustainable solutions on solid waste management, saying the population has also grown.
