Education CS vouches for e-learning effectiveness

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha yesterday vouched for the effectiveness of online and electronic delivery of lessons across the country, amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
Magoha said in a document presented to National Assembly Committee on Education that the outreach campaign has brought assurance to parents, teachers and public about the continued learning of their children during the period of the pandemic.
He said the outreach campaign has opened more partnership engagement with radio and TV stations, television signal and telecommunication service providers.
“More willing partners are coming on board to support Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development in its efforts to continue providing out-of-classroom lessons to over 15 million learners in primary and secondary schools currently at home due to the pandemic,” said Magoha.
To enhance effectiveness of the out-of-classroom learning programme across schools through EDU TV Channel, Magoha told Members of the National Assembly that Communication Authority directed all pay TV signal providers to carry this channel.
Reach learners
To reach many learners, parents and stakeholders and inform them on the out-of-classroom learning, Magoha said KICD has held discussions with Telkom and Safaricom on provision of bulk messaging services and wide listing.
Magoha said KICD has been undertaking outreach campaign in form of interviews with radio and TV stations with a view to gauging the level of outreach and feedback from the public on the out-of-classroom learning carried out by the institute.
“Every Friday, KICD develops a weekly radio and TV transmission schedules as programme line up usually publicised in its website, newspapers and social media platforms,” said Magoha.
KICD has also been running Kenya Education Cloud (KEC), an online portal for dissemination of digital content to learners in basic and tertiary education.
