Kenya has launched a green and digital innovation hub to support micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in using technology to grow their businesses.

The hub will provide MSMEs and start-ups country-wide with access to technology and innovation resources by equipping them with knowledge and networks that are necessary for entrepreneurs thriving in the current digital economy.

Aside from the knowledge and networks, members of the hub will be able to connect with experts in their fields, share knowledge among the peers, find markets for the products and services as well as access capital to enable them to grow.

The hub, which is implemented by GIZ Kenya and commissioned by the Government of Germany and the European Union, will serve as a platform for collaboration, learning and growth while promoting environmentally sustainable business practices.

The centre will be operated by a consortium of dedicated Kenyan entities comprising the African Center for technology, Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute, Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research organisation, Kenya National Innovation Agency and Konza Technopolis.

Bernard Lakemeier, programme director, sustainable economic development at GIZ Kenya, says the hub is set to be a major stride towards a more sustainable and digitally advanced country.

He states that the hub has the potential of bringing transformative effects on all involved sectors such as agriculture and even businesses.

“As the digital economy evolves and competition becomes more intense, the hub stands as a distinctive platform for MSMEs to level the playing field, ensuring equitable access to digital innovation opportunities for all MSMEs in Kenya, irrespective of their geographical location,” Lakemeier adds.

Tom Ogada, the Team lead of the ACTs consortium says embedding a green belief into technological advancements has a substantial implication on Kenya’s sustainable development and economic growth.

By collaborating with diverse stakeholders and organisations, he adds, they aim to extend the hub’s influence beyond Nairobi.
